"What would I do without health insurance?" says Anna Velazquez, 39, who
works at a health center. "I wouldn't be able to sleep at night,
worrying about my kids." Most of us want to help out the unfortunate. Cries like this are pitiful, whether they are coming from Americans or starving
The Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) was started to help out
the unfortunate - who are fortunate enough to call themselves
Americans. The Average Taxpayer has chipped in $32.60 per year ($5 billion) to help
these people, and our congressmen decided last week
Sudanese. Are we so cold that we turn away and ignore them? Americans historically do not.
that the Average Taxpayer is good for another $45.70 a year on top of that. "We can afford it," so they assume... and we might. It would be nice to hear a "Thank you" from somebody, though.
Should we trust Washington as the best organization to handle these matters? For example ,according to the Congressional Budget Office, 25% to 50% of CHIP's children previously had private insurance. Uh... let me think. Does that mean the government is taking our tax money to pay for poor people's insurance so that they can afford to buy other things? Call me hard, but hundreds of times I've witnessed who chokes the convenience store lines buying lottery tickets and cigarettes.
Still, it could be that private charities would be just as wasteful as Washington.
It's your money. You decide.
